Toll

Toll was originally introduced in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game as part of the Magic Ruler expansion in 2002. As a continuous spell card, it was designed to introduce a punitive mechanic to the game, requiring players to pay life points to declare an attack. This design reflects the early Konami era's interest in creating cards that could stall or alter the tempo of a duel, forcing players to manage their resources more carefully during the battle phase.

The inclusion of Toll in the Dark Beginning 1 set, released in 2004, served to reprint essential cards from the game's first few years for a new generation of players. Dark Beginning 1 was structured as a curated compilation set meant to provide a foundation for competitive decks, featuring the iconic card frame designs of the initial series. While Toll never reached the status of a staple, its presence in this set remains a nostalgic touchstone for players who collected during the transition from the early sets to the GX era.
