Toon Mermaid

The Toon Mermaid was introduced to the English TCG market in the 2002 Magic Ruler set, the third main expansion for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. This set is historically significant for introducing the Toon archetype and Ritual Monsters to the Western game, expanding the strategic complexity beyond the original starter decks and Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon release. The card was designed as a direct counterpart to the classic Mermaid card, reimagined with the whimsical, rubber-hose animation aesthetic characteristic of the Toon monster series.

The artistic direction for this card was heavily inspired by the American animation styles of the early 20th century, contrasting sharply with the darker, high-fantasy tone of many other early Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. As an Ultra Rare pull from the Magic Ruler packs, it became a highly sought-after collector's item during the initial boom of the game. Its design remains a staple of the archetype, serving as a functional engine piece that allows players to special summon it easily if Toon World is active on the field.
