Vanquishing Light was released in 2008 as part of the Light of Destruction booster set, the twenty-eighth set in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. This set was notable for introducing the Lightsworn archetype, a group of warrior-monks who utilize a self-milling mechanic to summon their boss monster, Judgment Dragon. The set was designed to shift the competitive landscape by rewarding players who could effectively manage their graveyard resources.

The card features an illustration depicting a celestial force manifesting to negate an opponent's summon. In terms of design, it serves as a specialized counter-trap, reflecting the high-risk, high-reward nature of the Lightsworn playstyle.
