The Zany Zebra was released as part of the 2016 Mega-Tin Mega Pack, which served as a compilation set for Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game players. These tins were designed to collect and reprint cards from the previous year's major booster sets, such as Clash of Rebellions and Dimension of Chaos, providing accessibility to cards that were previously harder to obtain. The Zany Zebra itself belongs to the Performapal archetype, a series of monsters known for their whimsical, circus-inspired visual design that heavily influenced the game's aesthetic during the Arc-V era.

Designed by the Konami creative team, the Performapal monsters were crafted to showcase the Pendulum Summoning mechanic introduced in the Arc-V series. The Zany Zebra specifically features a vibrant, playful illustration intended to fit the lighthearted theme of the Performapal deck.
