Where it came from
Released in 1991 by Media Rings, 1-gatsu ni wa Christmas, or Christmas in January, is a distinct entry in the late 1980s and early 1990s ova boom. Produced during a period when Japanese animation studios were heavily experimenting with stand-alone romantic dramas, the title sought to capture a poignant, bittersweet aesthetic typical of the era's character-driven storytelling.
The visual direction and character designs reflect the stylistic trends of the time, emphasizing soft, expressive features and deliberate atmosphere. While the project remains a niche interest within the broader landscape of 1990s animation, it is remembered by enthusiasts for its attempt to blend holiday themes with the reflective, often melancholic tone that characterized many direct-to-video releases of the period.
