Where it came from
10000 Years Later is a Chinese animated fantasy film released in 2015, directed by Yi-chiang Liao. Developed over a ten-year period, the project was envisioned as an epic, world-building experiment that utilized a distinct aesthetic blending traditional Chinese mythology with futuristic, post-apocalyptic elements. It was produced by the animation studio Original Force, which aimed to establish a high-concept indigenous fantasy franchise that could compete with international animated features.
The film's visual design is characterized by its heavily stylized, high-contrast imagery and surreal character modeling, which drew significant attention from critics upon its release. The narrative focuses on the struggle between a technologically advanced but morally bankrupt future civilization and the remnants of an ancient, mystical past. While it garnered attention for its ambition and visual scale, it received a mixed reception, with some praising its experimental imagery and others finding the complex lore difficult to navigate within the runtime.
