Where it came from
The second season of 12-sai.: Chiccha na Mune no Tokimeki, or Age 12: A Little Heart-Pounding, was produced by studio OLM and released in 2016. It serves as a direct continuation of the series adapted from Nao Maita’s shoujo manga serialized in Ciao magazine. The narrative focuses on the awkward, burgeoning romantic experiences of sixth-grade girls, specifically protagonists Hanabi Ayase and Yui Aoi, navigating the transitions of puberty and middle school life.
The series design maintains the soft, pastel-heavy aesthetic typical of contemporary shoujo anime aimed at a younger demographic. Produced to appeal to pre-teen audiences, the show was directed by Masatoshi Hakata and aimed to provide a grounded, relatable look at young love. It was received as a gentle, slice-of-life exploration of its source material, praised for its focus on the emotional anxieties of its young cast rather than more mature tropes often found in the genre.
