Where it came from
3x3 Eyes: Legend of the Divine Demon was released in 1995 as the second major OVA series adapting Yuzo Takada’s long-running manga. Following the success of the 1991 adaptation, this sequel was produced by Bandai Visual to continue the supernatural journey of Pai and Yakumo. The project aimed to capture the dark, mythological scope of the source material, blending high-stakes action with the character-driven romance that defined the series.
The animation design sought to refine the aesthetic established in the earlier OVAs, focusing on intricate character expressions and the elaborate creature designs central to the story’s lore. While it arrived during a period of heavy competition in the OVA market, the series was well-received by fans of the dark fantasy genre for its commitment to the complex world-building of the manga and its technical execution, marking a significant entry in 1990s anime history.
