3X3 Eyes is the story of a young man named Yakumo Fuuji, who through a strange series of events becomes the immortal slave of the last of a race of 3 Eyed immortals. The immortal absorbs his soul to save his life, making him immortal in the process. Now, he begins a journey with the female immortal in an attempt to find a way of becoming human. Of course, there are many complications along the way, not the least of which being that the immortal is a female with a split personality, one achingly cute and the other being no-nonsense destructive power, and the romances that develop between.

Where it came from
3x3 Eyes emerged as a seminal work of 1990s dark fantasy, based on the manga series by Yuzo Takada. Produced as a four-part original video animation (OVA) series by Bandai Visual and Toei Animation starting in 1991, the adaptation aimed to capture the visceral blend of ancient mythology, supernatural horror, and romantic drama that defined the source material. It served as a landmark title in the golden age of the OVA market, showcasing high-end production values that elevated the medium's reputation for serious, mature storytelling.
The character design for the anime was helmed by Kazuchika Kise, whose work sought to translate Takada’s intricate pen-and-ink style into fluid animation. The series follows the journey of Pai, a member of a near-extinct race with three eyes, and her human companion Yakumo, exploring themes of immortality and human connection. It was received as a stylish and atmospheric entry in the genre, credited with helping to popularize the 'shonen horror' aesthetic among international audiences during the early surge of global anime interest.
