Where it came from
44 Hiki no Neko, or 44 Cats, originated as a popular children's song broadcast on NHK's long-running program Minna no Uta in 1969. The song's whimsical narrative, which depicts the lively antics of 44 cats, was brought to life through distinct, stylized animation that became synonymous with the program's aesthetic. Its enduring popularity led to its status as a staple of Japanese children's media culture.
The visual design and animation for the piece were crafted to evoke a sense of playful storytelling, prioritizing charm and rhythmic fluidity to match the song's catchy tempo. As a product of NHK's in-house production, it reflected the network's commitment to high-quality educational and entertainment programming during the late Showa era. It remains a nostalgic touchstone for generations of viewers who grew up with the daily rotation of Minna no Uta segments.
