When aviation mechanic (and anime fanboy) Takuya Isurugi is transferred to the 801st Tactical Training Squadron, he gets more than he bargained for. Moderated by hard-headed veteran ace Mitsuru Konishi, the "Airbats" are an all-female aerial acrobatic team consisting of loose cannons Miyuki Haneda and Arisa Mitaka, karaoke freak and gambling genius Sakura Saginomiya, and junk food lover Yoko Shimorenjaku. Both Haneda and Mitaka do not get along with each other, and their rivalry worsens when they both fall for Isurugi. But with the entire JASDF having doubts about the team, the Airbats must work as a team or face total disbandment.

Where it came from
The T.T.S. Airbats was released in 1994 as an original video animation produced by Studio Fantasia. Emerging during a decade where the OVA market in Japan flourished through direct-to-video sales, the project was designed to capitalize on the aesthetic trends of high-octane mecha and sci-fi action series that defined the period. It followed a team of specialized pilots utilizing transformation-capable aerial vehicles to combat threats in a futuristic setting, adhering to the standard episodic action-adventure tropes of the era.
Directed by Katsuhiko Nishijima, the project aimed to showcase the technical animation capabilities of Studio Fantasia, a studio frequently contracted for its proficiency in detailed mechanical animation. The visual design focuses on the sleek, militaristic aesthetics common to 1990s anime, prioritizing dynamic flight sequences and tactical maneuvers. While the series remains a niche entry in the studio's broader portfolio, it is regarded by enthusiasts as a quintessential example of mid-90s 'bubble economy' animation production, reflecting the era's focus on experimental genre hybridity.
