Where it came from
A Bite of Bone was released in 2021 by the acclaimed independent studio Yamamura Animation, led by the animator Koji Yamamura. The film serves as an evocative, hand-drawn exploration of memory and the passage of time, themes that are central to Yamamura's body of work. It was created as an experimental short, utilizing the studio's signature surrealist aesthetic and fluid, sketch-like animation style to convey complex emotional states rather than a linear narrative.
The production process relied heavily on traditional animation techniques, prioritizing the tactile quality of the line work to anchor the film's abstract, dreamlike sequences. Upon its release, the film was well-received within the international animation festival circuit, praised for its technical craftsmanship and its ability to evoke a profound sense of melancholy. It stands as a significant example of modern auteur-driven animation, reflecting a continued commitment to the artistic potential of the medium.
