Where it came from
Abe George Kattobi Seishun Ki: Shibuya Honky Tonk was released in 1988 as an original video animation (OVA) produced by Tokuma Japan Communications. The project emerged during the peak of the 1980s Japanese home video boom, a period defined by studios experimenting with niche, edgy, and often comedic content intended for a young adult audience rather than television broadcast.
The animation reflects the stylistic hallmarks of late 1980s character design, leaning into the vibrant, urban-focused aesthetic popular in Japanese media at the time. While the production is considered a deep cut within the vast landscape of bubble-era OVAs, it remains a notable example of the era's tendency to adapt idiosyncratic manga and light novel properties into short-form animated features, focusing on themes of youth, rebellion, and the neon-soaked atmosphere of Shibuya.
