A Journey Through Fairyland

A Journey Through Fairyland was produced by Sanrio in 1985 as part of their ambitious 1980s expansion into feature-length animation. Known globally for the Hello Kitty brand, Sanrio utilized this project to explore a more traditional, high-fantasy aesthetic, drawing heavily on the influence of Victorian fairy lore and classical illustration styles. The film was created to offer a gentle, visually opulent experience that stood apart from the more action-oriented animation dominating the Japanese market at the time.

The film's visual identity was heavily shaped by its collaboration with the English illustrator Cicely Mary Barker, whose renowned Flower Fairies series provided the direct inspiration for the character designs and the film's whimsical, pastoral atmosphere. By integrating Barker’s iconic artistic vision, Sanrio aimed to capture an international, nostalgic appeal. While it received a modest reception upon its initial release, the film remains a notable artifact of Sanrio’s attempt to bridge Japanese animation techniques with Western artistic traditions.
