Where it came from
Apfelland Monogatari, or Appleland Story, was produced by J.C.Staff and released in 1992 as a feature-length original video animation. It was adapted from a science fiction novel by Hiroshi Aramata, an author celebrated for his ability to weave dense, mythological, and historical elements into speculative narratives. The project served as an ambitious showcase for J.C.Staff during a period when the studio was establishing its reputation for high-production-value animation.
The film's aesthetic leans into a distinct fusion of fantasy and techno-organic design, characteristic of early 1990s experimental animation. Directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi, the work was intended to translate Aramata’s intricate world-building into a visually lush cinematic experience. While it remains a niche entry in the studio’s catalog, it is frequently studied by enthusiasts for its unique atmosphere and the ambition of its production design, which sought to push the limits of contemporary cel animation techniques.
