ABUNAI SISTERS: KOKO & MIKA

Abunai Sisters: Koko & Mika was produced by the renowned Japanese animation studio Production I.G and released in 2009. The project was conceived as a promotional vehicle for the media personalities Mika and Koko Kano, two sisters known for their fashion modeling and television appearances in Japan. The OVA served as a stylized, fictionalized adaptation of their public personas, placing them in an action-heavy, espionage-themed narrative designed to leverage their growing celebrity status within the Japanese pop culture landscape at the time.

The creative direction for the project focused on a hyper-stylized aesthetic that leaned heavily into contemporary action tropes and character-driven design. Because the animation was produced during a period of experimentation with shorter, digital-first distribution formats, the visual style prioritized vivid color palettes and kinetic character movements. Upon its release, the series received significant attention from the animation community, largely due to the stark contrast between the prestige typically associated with Production I.G’s filmography and the highly niche, experimental nature of this specific collaboration.
