An original anime set in a part of Tokyo that has descended into a quagmire, the story follows Unit 8 of the 5th Special Public Security Section's 3rd Mobile Assault Division — popularly called "The Eighth" — who don powered armor "Willware" exoskeletons to counter the rise in crime. Assistant inspector Asami Kazari is assigned to The Eighth with the task of assessing the unit's status and reporting it to her superiors. But her true goal is to rehabilitate this sloppy, haphazard, justice-less group.

Where it came from
Active Raid was produced by Studio IMS and premiered in 2016, emerging during a period when the studio was exploring original science-fiction concepts. The series was directed by Goro Taniguchi, known for his work on Code Geass, and was conceived as a high-concept police procedural set in a future Tokyo where specially equipped units combat crime using powered exoskeletons known as Willwears.
The character designs were handled by Asako Nishida, who sought to blend a sleek, futuristic aesthetic with the grounded tone of a law enforcement drama. Upon its release, the series received a mixed reception from critics and audiences, with many noting its unconventional blend of lighthearted banter and political intrigue, which set it apart from typical mecha offerings of the era.
