Where it came from
Adachi and Shimamura is an anime television series adapted from the light novel series written by Hitoma Iruma. Produced by Tezuka Productions and directed by Satoshi Kuwabara, the series debuted in 2020 as a meditative exploration of the developing relationship between two high school girls. The production sought to capture the contemplative and often melancholic tone of the source material, focusing heavily on internal monologues and the subtle shifts in intimacy between the protagonists.
The character designs were handled by Shizue Kaneko, who aimed to preserve the soft, emotive aesthetic of the light novel's illustrations. By utilizing a deliberate pacing and a muted color palette, the creative team crafted a visual narrative that emphasizes the quiet environments the characters inhabit. Upon its release, the adaptation was noted for its departure from traditional romantic comedy tropes, garnering a specific following among audiences who appreciate character-driven, atmospheric storytelling.
