Adventures of Pepero the Andes Boy

Adventures of Pepero the Andes Boy, known in Japan as Andes Shōnen Pepero no Bōken, was produced by Wako Production and first aired in 1975. The series was created to capitalize on the popularity of adventure-themed anime centered on young protagonists exploring remote landscapes, drawing heavily on the romanticized aesthetic of the Andes mountains. It follows the titular character, Pepero, on a quest to find the City of Gold to save his father, reflecting the era's fascination with historical myth and exploration narratives.

The production design was characterized by a distinct mid-1970s animation style, emphasizing sweeping, adventurous backdrops that aimed to evoke a sense of scale and wonder. While Wako Production was a smaller studio compared to giants like Toei Animation or TMS Entertainment, the series is remembered by enthusiasts of the genre for its earnest tone and its contribution to the sub-genre of world-traveling adventure stories that were prevalent in Japanese television at the time.
