AIR GEAR: Kuro no Hane to Nemuri no Mori - Break on the Sky

Released in 2010, the Air Gear: Kuro no Hane to Nemuri no Mori - Break on the Sky project serves as an original video animation series that adapts specific narrative arcs from the Air Gear manga, created by Oh! Great. Following the conclusion of the initial television anime run, these OVAs were produced by Studio Satelight to delve into the darker, high-stakes tournament arcs of the source material. The project aimed to capture the kinetic, gravity-defying spirit of the series' Air Treck racing while utilizing a more refined animation style intended to better reflect the intricate character designs found in the original print publication.

The reception of these OVAs was largely directed toward established fans who desired a continuation of the manga's complex plotlines regarding the various Storm Riders. While the animation was praised for its stylistic fidelity to the intense, fast-paced action sequences typical of the franchise, the project functioned primarily as a companion piece to the manga volumes rather than an expansion for a general audience. It remains a notable example of late-2000s anime production, capturing the specific aesthetic transition as studios moved toward more digital-heavy composition techniques.
