Where it came from
Aikatsu Planet! premiered in 2021 as the fifth entry in the long-running Aikatsu! multimedia franchise produced by Bandai Namco Pictures. Created to refresh the brand, the series shifted from traditional animation to a hybrid format that combined live-action segments with 3D computer-generated imagery. This experimental approach reflected a deliberate attempt to blend the familiar idol-themed narrative of its predecessors with a modern, tech-focused aesthetic centered around a virtual-reality idol world.
The production utilized a mix of practical effects and digital animation to depict the 'Aikatsu Planet,' a virtual space where idols perform. Behind the scenes, the project aimed to push the technical capabilities of the studio, though its departure from the established cel-shaded style of previous series generated significant debate among long-time fans. Despite the mixed reception to its radical change in format, the show is recognized for its unique visual integration and its role in bridging the gap between traditional children's television and contemporary digital entertainment.
