Where it came from
Ajimu: Kaigan Monogatari, released in 2001, holds a distinctive place in animation history as one of the earliest examples of an Original Net Animation, or ONA. Produced by Studio Actas, the series was designed to experiment with the then-nascent potential of digital distribution, aiming to reach audiences directly via the internet rather than through traditional television broadcasts or physical media releases.
The series was directed by Yoshitomo Yonetani, who sought to capture a whimsical, character-driven narrative centered on the titular protagonist, Ajimu. While the show's animation quality reflects the technical limitations of early 2000s streaming infrastructure, it remains a notable historical artifact for its role in pioneering the ONA format, which would eventually become the industry standard for experimental and direct-to-consumer anime projects.
