Where it came from
Akazukin, Tabi no Tochuu de Shitai to Deau was produced by Studio BENTEN Film and released in 2027 as a contemporary reimagining of the Red Riding Hood fable. The series emerged during a period of creative experimentation in the anime industry, where classic Western folklore was frequently reinterpreted through the lens of dark fantasy and psychological thriller tropes. BENTEN Film sought to move away from traditional adaptations, opting instead for a non-linear narrative structure that prioritized atmospheric world-building over conventional genre storytelling.
The visual direction for the series focused on a stark, minimalist aesthetic, contrasting vibrant, saturated character designs against muted, desaturated environments to emphasize the protagonist's sense of isolation. Critics noted the deliberate pacing and experimental sound design, which served to cultivate an unsettling tone throughout the journey. Upon its release, the series received praise for its ambitious cinematography and willingness to subvert audience expectations regarding the fairy tale framework, cementing BENTEN Film's reputation for stylized, high-concept animation.
