The story revolves around a typical high school boy named Kakeru Daichi and the can of melon juice soda that he bought from a vending machine. The can suddenly transforms into a beautiful but standoffish girl that Kakeru nicknames "Melon," and more "Akikan" ("empty can") girls appear. However, Akikan girls need to be infused with carbon dioxide in order to turn into a human.

Where it came from
The Akikan! OVA was released in 2009 by studio Brain's Base as a direct continuation of the television anime series of the same year. Based on the light novel series by Riku Ranjo, the franchise centers on a fantastical premise where juice cans transform into anthropomorphic girls. The animation was produced to satisfy the niche demand for the series' eccentric blend of slapstick comedy, romance, and supernatural battles, following the conclusion of the broadcast run.
The character designs were handled by Tatsuya Yoshioka, who adapted the original illustrations by Hiro Suzuhira. The production aimed to lean into the light novel's irreverent tone and absurd visual gags. Upon its release, the OVA was received as a standard extension of the TV series, primarily catering to existing fans who appreciated the franchise's unique, albeit polarizing, premise within the late-2000s anime landscape.
