Akudama Drive

Akudama Drive was produced by Studio Pierrot in collaboration with Too Kyo Games and released in 2020. The project was conceived as a high-octane cyberpunk action series, heavily influenced by the stylistic and thematic sensibilities of writer Kazutaka Kodaka, best known for the Danganronpa franchise. Set in a dystopian version of Kansai, the show explores a society grappling with the aftermath of a devastating civil war, focusing on a group of criminals known as Akudama who are forced into a dangerous government operation.

The aesthetic design of the series was led by character designer Cindy H. Yamauchi, who sought to blend traditional animation with vibrant, neon-drenched visuals that pay homage to classic 1990s cyberpunk anime like Ghost in the Shell and Akira. Upon its release, the series was noted for its frenetic pacing and bold color palette, drawing praise from critics for its unapologetic commitment to a chaotic, stylized narrative style that stood out amidst the broader landscape of the 2020 anime season.
