Amon Saga

Amon Saga was produced by Toei Animation and released as an original video animation in 1986. The project was based on a fantasy novel by Baku Yumemakura, a prominent author in the Japanese speculative fiction scene known for his ability to blend gritty action with metaphysical themes. The production emerged during the early golden age of the OVA market, a period when studios were experimenting with higher production values and more mature storytelling outside the constraints of television broadcast standards.

The character designs for the project were handled by Yoshitaka Amano, whose distinct, ethereal aesthetic was instrumental in shaping the visual identity of the work. Amano sought to translate the dreamlike, high-fantasy tone of Yumemakura's prose into animation, emphasizing fluid lines and evocative, moody environments. While the project was noted by enthusiasts for its ambitious artistic direction and Amano's involvement, it ultimately garnered a niche reception, remaining a curiosity of the mid-80s animation boom rather than a mainstream hit.
