Where it came from
An Observation Log of My Fiancée Who Calls Herself a Villainess, known in Japan as Jishou Akuyaku Reijou na Konyakusha no Kansatsu Kiroku, began as a light novel series written by Shiki with illustrations by Haduki Nashia. The narrative subverts the popular villainess trope by shifting the perspective to the prince, Cecil, who finds his fiancée Bertia’s antics highly entertaining rather than threatening. This premise resonated deeply with readers, leading to a manga adaptation that further popularized the series before it was greenlit for an ONA adaptation by Ashi Productions.
The 2026 animation project by Ashi Productions sought to capture the comedic tone and the unique dynamic between the two leads. By focusing on the playful, observational nature of the prince’s point of view, the production team aimed to highlight the absurdity of Bertia's self-appointed villainess persona. The work is widely recognized within the romance-fantasy genre for its lighthearted humor and character-driven charm, contributing to the enduring interest in the original source material's exploration of court politics through a comedic lens.
