ANEMONE: Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution

Released in 2018 as the second installment in the Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution film trilogy, Anemone reimagines the narrative of the original 2005 television series. Produced by studio Bones, the project was conceived by director Tomoki Kyoda and screenwriter Dai Sato to overhaul the franchise's continuity through a more introspective lens. This specific entry focuses heavily on the character of Anemone, shifting the perspective from the protagonist Renton Thurston to her experience in Tokyo, utilizing a blend of traditional animation and experimental aesthetic choices to distinguish itself from the original series.

The production design team aimed to elevate the visual language of the franchise, incorporating contemporary digital animation techniques to create high-contrast, atmospheric environments. While the ambitious narrative shift polarized long-time fans who were accustomed to the linear structure of the original show, critics generally praised the film for its technical mastery and the depth of its character study. It stands as a significant example of a studio revisiting an established intellectual property to explore darker, more psychological themes through its existing character archetypes.
