Where it came from
Angel, an anime series broadcast by TV Asahi in 1979, emerged during a transitional period in Japanese animation history. As the medium began to mature beyond purely children-oriented programming, studios like TV Asahi sought to experiment with broader genre tropes. The production reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the late seventies, focusing on the character-driven narratives that were beginning to define the era's output before the explosive technological shifts of the 1980s.
The series remains a niche entry in the TV Asahi archives, often cited by animation historians as a representative example of the studio's mid-range production standards of the time. While it did not reach the global fame of its contemporaries, it is recognized for its traditional cel-animation techniques and the stylistic influence of the character design teams tasked with balancing expressive, approachable forms with the melodrama common in 1970s television storytelling.
