Angel

Released in 1990, Angel represents a notable entry from the boutique animation studio Green Bunny during the height of the original video animation (OVA) boom in Japan. This period was characterized by a surge in independent productions that bypassed traditional television broadcasting, allowing smaller studios to experiment with more adult-oriented themes and specialized aesthetic styles that catered to an increasingly niche market of dedicated anime enthusiasts.

The production sought to capitalize on the rising popularity of character-driven narratives within the OVA format, focusing on a polished, stylized visual presentation. While the studio’s output was often distributed to a narrow audience, the design work reflects the era's transition toward more fluid animation techniques and the refined, often melancholic, character aesthetics that defined the early 1990s direct-to-video market. It remains a representative artifact of the creative freedom afforded to independent animators before the widespread digital shifts later in the decade.
