Another Journey to the West

Another Journey to the West was released in 2016 by Tencent Penguin Pictures as a high-budget ONA adaptation of the seminal 16th-century Chinese novel. It emerged during a period of rapid professionalization for the Chinese animation industry, serving as a prestige project intended to demonstrate that domestic studios could handle complex classical literature with modern visual techniques. The production aimed to subvert traditional portrayals of the Monkey King by focusing on themes of reincarnation and historical reimagining.

The visual design leaned heavily into a polished, cinematic aesthetic influenced by contemporary global animation trends while maintaining a distinct domestic flavor. The series was received as a technically ambitious attempt to modernize a cultural cornerstone, though it invited intense scrutiny from longtime fans of the original text. It stands as a significant case study in Tencent's early strategy to capture the domestic streaming market through the adaptation of classic intellectual property.
