Where it came from
Released in 2018, Anpanman: Shine! Kulun and The Stars Of Life serves as the 30th feature film in the long-running Anpanman franchise, produced by TMS Entertainment to commemorate the series' 30th anniversary. The film centers on a mysterious girl named Kulun who emerges from a star, introducing a narrative that explores themes of creation and the origins of life, which aligns with the educational and gentle ethos established by creator Takashi Yanase in his original picture books.
The production maintains the recognizable aesthetic of the franchise, relying on a character-driven approach that has defined the series since its television debut in 1988. By focusing on the interplay between the protagonist and new additions like Kulun, the film aimed to reinforce the brand's enduring popularity with young Japanese audiences. It was generally well-received within its demographic, fulfilling its role as a stable, comforting annual cinematic entry for children and established fans of the Anpanman universe.
