The film Ao Oni The Animation will be closer to the traditional mystery horror of the original game, although it will have a new story that is different from the original game, novelization, and live-action films.
The story takes place in a suburban town by a mountain forest. The five members of the high school's folklore research club are trying to think of ideas for the culture festival when they discover a former member's collection of research notes from 40 years ago. The legend described in the notes resembles a popular free game called "Ao Oni," so they choose the game as their culture festival theme. They are able to meet with the game's creator, but shortly afterward the creator dies mysteriously. The club members are investigating the mystery at the school when the door shuts and they find themselves locked inside.

Where it came from
Ao Oni The Animation was released in 2017 as a comedic spin-off film based on the popular Japanese survival horror game franchise created by noprops. Produced by Studio DEEN, this project diverged significantly from the tense, atmospheric tone of the original RPG Maker game. Instead, it embraced a lighthearted, parodic approach, reimagining the titular blue demon and the students it pursues through a chibi-style aesthetic intended to subvert the expectations of long-time fans.
The film was directed by Toshikazu Hamana, with a script penned by the novelist Kenji Kurata, who sought to frame the familiar tropes of the source material through the lens of a school-based comedy. While the core concept of the original game is rooted in psychological dread, the animation team opted for a stylistic shift that emphasized character interactions and slapstick humor. Upon its release, it was received as a niche curiosity, recognized primarily by enthusiasts of the viral web-game phenomenon as a playful, if unconventional, departure from the horror roots of the brand.
