Where it came from
AOTU Xueyuan, or AOTU Academy, is a spin-off series derived from the popular Chinese web-series AOTU World, produced by the animation studio 7doc. The series was developed to expand the universe of the original franchise, pivoting away from the high-stakes tactical combat of the main storyline to focus on a lighthearted, comedic academic setting that features the series' established cast of characters in a school-life format.
The character designs maintain the distinct, blocky aesthetic characteristic of the AOTU franchise, a style that draws inspiration from low-poly 3D modeling and minimalist cel-shading. This aesthetic was initially conceived by the creative team at 7doc to facilitate faster production and a unique visual identity within the crowded Chinese animation market, and it was received by fans as a playful departure from the series' typically gritty battle-royale narrative.
