Area 88 originated as a compelling manga series by Kaoru Shintani before being adapted into a three-part original video animation series by Studio Pierrot in 1985. The story follows Shin Kazama, a pilot caught in a web of betrayal who is forced to serve as a mercenary in a Middle Eastern war zone. This adaptation was highly regarded for its realistic technical depiction of fighter aircraft and its somber, mature exploration of the psychological toll of prolonged aerial combat.
