Arata: The Legend, known in Japan as Arata Kangatari, is an anime television series adapted from the manga by Yuu Watase. Produced by Satelight and directed by Kenji Yasui, the series premiered in 2013 as part of the spring broadcast season. The narrative follows a young boy named Arata who is transported to a fantasy world modeled on ancient Japan, where he becomes entangled in a struggle for sovereignty. The production sought to balance high-fantasy tropes with character-driven drama, reflecting the emotional tone characteristic of Watase's earlier successful works.

The character designs were handled by Masahiro Ose, who aimed to translate Watase's distinct, ethereal art style into a fluid animation format suitable for television.
