Synopsis

Deep in the sandy plains of the Middle Eastern kingdom of Asran, Japanese photojournalist Makoto Shinjou travels to the remote airbase Area 88 to document the activities of the mercenaries who destroy the country's enemies for a living. Among their ranks is Shin Kazama, a Japanese ace pilot who was tricked by his former best friend into signing a contract with the Asran's fighter squad. Because of this, he lost his career as an airline pilot and the chance to marry his fiancee Ryoko Tsugumo. Now, Shin has three choices in order to leave Area 88 and return to Japan: serve the mercenary group for three years, earn US$1.5 million, or desert the base, risking imminent death.

Provenance

Where it came from

The 2004 Area 88 television series was produced by Group TAC and aired on TV Asahi, serving as a modern adaptation of Kaoru Shintani's seminal manga from the 1980s. While the original 1985 original video animation is highly regarded for its cel-animated aesthetic, this 2004 production sought to retell the story of Shin Kazama, a pilot forcibly recruited into a mercenary air force in the fictional Middle Eastern nation of Asran, using a combination of traditional animation and contemporary computer-generated imagery for its aerial combat sequences.

The series was directed by Isao Shizu and aimed to flesh out the complex narrative arcs of the original manga that were compressed in previous adaptations. By leaning into the darker, psychological toll of mercenary warfare, the 2004 iteration offered a more expansive exploration of Shin's desire to escape his contracts and return to his life in Japan. It remains a notable entry in the aerial combat genre, recognized for its commitment to accurately representing the mechanics of the aircraft while maintaining the high-stakes drama synonymous with the franchise's identity.
