Where it came from
A Record of Mortal's Journey to Immortality, released as a 3D animated ONA by Bilibili starting in 2020, adapts the foundational xianxia web novel by Wang Yu. The series follows the protagonist Han Li, a pragmatic and ordinary youth who navigates the cutthroat world of cultivation through intelligence and calculated risk rather than innate destiny. This adaptation is part of a broader shift in the Chinese animation industry toward high-fidelity, motion-captured 3D aesthetics aimed at capturing the intricate magic systems and martial arts choreography inherent to the source material.
The production is notable for its commitment to technical realism, utilizing advanced motion capture to distinguish itself from more stylized or traditional animation. The creative team aimed to maintain the gritty, survivalist tone of the original novel, which had long been considered a cult classic of the genre. Upon release, it was widely praised for its fluid action sequences and technical fidelity, becoming a flagship title for Bilibili and setting a new benchmark for visual quality in contemporary Chinese donghua.
