Argento Soma Special

The Argento Soma Special serves as a supplementary release to the 2000 science fiction anime series produced by the renowned studio Sunrise. Directed by Masahiko Murata, the original series was a bold departure for the studio, blending heavy psychological themes with mechanical design inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft and Mary Shelley. This special was developed in the early 2000s as a retrospective piece, designed to clarify the intricate narrative threads and the complex relationship between the protagonist, Takuto Kaneshiro, and the alien lifeforms known as the 'Negative'.

The visual identity of the Argento Soma universe was defined by a distinct, melancholic atmosphere that sought to emphasize the isolation of its characters rather than the high-octane spectacle common to the mecha genre at the time. The production team utilized a somber color palette and deliberate pacing to mirror the protagonist's trauma. While the original series received a polarized reception due to its dense, slow-burning plot, this special remains a point of interest for dedicated enthusiasts of turn-of-the-millennium animation who appreciate the experimental storytelling ambitions of the era.
