Synopsis

Kozue is a high school girl and an enthusiastic volleyball player. Her dream is to play on the Japanese national volleyball team. Over the course of the series she makes it from the school district league up to the Japanese volleyball finals, step by step until the international volleyball championship. But the faster and higher Kozue climbs, the more she is confronted with the dark side of success: too-high expectations, self-conceit, and envy.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1970, the Attack No. 1 feature film serves as a theatrical condensation of the groundbreaking sports anime series produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha. Originally adapted from the manga by Chikako Urano, the franchise was a pioneering force in the 'shōjo' sports genre, centering on the intense journey of volleyball player Kozue Ayuhara. The film was created during the height of the series' popularity, capitalizing on the cultural fervor surrounding Japan's national women's volleyball success in international competition.

The production maintains the distinct visual aesthetic characteristic of 1970s Tokyo Movie Shinsha animation, emphasizing dramatic, high-contrast character expressions and stylized motion sequences designed to heighten the emotional stakes of the sport. While the series was lauded for its realistic portrayal of athletic training and team dynamics, the film version is noted for its ability to distill the series' sprawling narrative of discipline and perseverance into a focused cinematic experience. It remains a significant piece of anime history, credited with inspiring generations of viewers to engage with competitive sports.
