Where it came from
Attack No. 1: Namida no Sekai Senshuken was released in 1970 as a cinematic expansion of the pioneering sports anime series based on the manga by Chikako Urano. Following the massive success of the television broadcast, Tokyo Movie Shinsha produced this feature film to capitalize on the audience's growing fascination with the high-stakes world of international competitive volleyball, placing the protagonist Kozue Ayuhara on the global stage.
The film was designed to elevate the visual intensity of the original series, featuring dynamic animation techniques that emphasized the grueling physical toll and emotional psychological pressure of professional sports. Directed by Fumio Kurokawa, the project aimed to provide a grander, more cinematic conclusion to the narrative arc. It was well-received as a significant milestone in the shōjo sports genre, cementing the franchise's legacy as a foundational influence on later athletic anime.
