Attack No.1: Namida no Fushichou

Attack No. 1: Namida no Fushichou was released in 1971 as part of the cinematic expansion of the popular Attack No. 1 sports anime franchise. Produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, the film was designed to capitalize on the massive cultural impact of the original series, which is credited with sparking a widespread volleyball craze across Japan during the late 1960s. The production served as a summary and continuation of the high-stakes drama that defined the sports shōjo genre of the era.

The film maintains the distinct aesthetic established by director Fumio Kurokawa and character designer Akio Sugino, focusing on the intense emotional stakes and physically gravity-defying athletic feats of the protagonist, Kozue Ayuhara. It was received as a quintessential piece of sports melodrama, reflecting the period's cultural emphasis on perseverance and national pride. The animation style captures the dramatic, expressive facial close-ups and dynamic movement that became a trademark of the series' influence on later sports anime.
