Baby Felix

Baby Felix was produced by the Japanese animation studio Radix in 2000 as a reimagining of the classic Felix the Cat character. The series was designed to introduce the iconic black cat to a new generation of younger viewers, shifting the tone toward a more whimsical, child-friendly narrative compared to the surrealist origins of the original shorts. By framing the protagonist as a toddler, the studio leaned into contemporary trends of 'baby' versions of established intellectual properties that were popular in early 2000s animation.

The series was created with heavy involvement from Felix the Cat Productions, aiming to maintain the visual consistency of the character while adapting him to a high-energy, episodic television format. While it was intended to capitalize on international nostalgia for the character, the show's reception was primarily concentrated in Japan and parts of Europe. It remains an interesting study in how legacy animation brands were refitted for the aesthetic demands of the turn-of-the-millennium digital animation era.
