Where it came from
The Bakemonogatari promotional video was produced by Studio Shaft in 2008 to generate anticipation for the anime adaptation of Nisio Isin's popular light novel series. Under the creative direction of Akiyuki Shinbo, the studio utilized this short clip to establish the distinct, experimental visual language that would define the entire Monogatari franchise, characterized by rapid-fire text overlays, surrealist color palettes, and unconventional framing.
The video was primarily designed to demonstrate Shaft's willingness to depart from traditional animation styles, emphasizing the psychological inner monologues of the characters through graphic design rather than linear narrative. Upon its release, the PV was widely praised by the anime community for its bold aesthetic choices, successfully setting a high bar for the series' production values and cementing the studio's reputation for stylized, auteur-driven animation.
