Where it came from
BAKUMATSU Crisis serves as the second season of the anime series based on the mobile game BAKUMATSU, which was originally developed by FuRyu. Produced by Studio DEEN and released in 2019, the series reimagines the late Edo period of Japanese history by introducing science-fiction elements, specifically an ancient treasure known as the Chrono Clock that allows characters to alter the timeline. The project sought to capitalize on the popularity of historical fantasy narratives that blend real-life samurai figures with supernatural tropes.
The character designs were overseen by Hidekazu Shimamura, who focused on balancing traditional period aesthetics with the stylized, vibrant look characteristic of otome-oriented anime franchises. The series was designed to provide a more direct conflict compared to its predecessor, centered on the struggle against the Infinite Mugen empire. Upon release, it was received primarily as a niche title, appreciated by fans of the original game for its expanded narrative scope and character development.
