Where it came from
Released in 2014, Bakumatsu Rock: Mystery! Onsen Kaijiken ze yo!! serves as an original video animation companion to the Bakumatsu Rock anime series, which was itself based on a rhythm video game developed by Marvelous. Produced by Studio DEEN, the OVA expands on the show's unconventional premise, which reimagines historical figures of the Bakumatsu period as rock musicians fighting for musical freedom against the fictional Tokugawa shogunate's oppressive rhythm-based propaganda.
The production maintains the flamboyant aesthetic established by the series, characterized by high-energy musical sequences and bold character designs meant to emphasize the rebellious 'rock and roll' spirit of the protagonists. While the franchise leaned into a niche audience of visual novel fans and music-anime enthusiasts, the OVA was designed to provide a lighter, self-contained mystery narrative that showcased the cast's personality dynamics outside of the main plot's geopolitical tension.
