The stage is the close of the Edo period, an age when, not unlike our own time, both natural and man-made disasters left chaos in their wake. Manjiro makes a living helping the people of the troubled capital city, but behind the scenes, he also works in secret to take back precious belongings stolen from the people by unjust political powers and conspiratorial menaces. The people call him "Get-backer Roman."

Where it came from
Bakumatsu Gijinden Roman was produced by TMS Entertainment and aired in early 2013 as a historical action series. The project was conceived as an anime adaptation based on the pachinko machine franchise created by Sammy, aiming to blend the colorful, tumultuous energy of the Bakumatsu period with the theatrical tropes of a classic caper narrative.
The character designs were conceptualized by the legendary manga artist Monkey Punch, best known for his long-running Lupin III series. His distinct, angular style is highly evident in the protagonist, Manjiro, who operates as a masked hero protecting the downtrodden. While the series was a niche experiment in cross-media marketing, it remains a notable example of a studio attempting to translate the high-stakes, character-driven appeal of a gaming property into an episodic television format.
