Where it came from
Banner of the Stars III was released in 2005 as a three-episode original video animation series, serving as a direct continuation of the anime adaptations of Hiroyuki Morioka's Crest and Banner of the Stars light novel series. Produced by Sunrise and directed by Yasunori Ide, the project aimed to provide a definitive conclusion to the conflict depicted in the second season of the television series. It focuses on the evolving relationship between the Abh empress-designate Lafiel and the human Jint Lin, maintaining the series' signature blend of grand-scale space opera and intimate character-driven drama.
The visual design of the series upholds the aesthetic established by the earlier Sunrise productions, prioritizing a grounded approach to hard science fiction despite the space-fantasy elements of the setting. While the original novels were praised for their intricate world-building and invented languages, the anime adaptations faced the challenge of translating dense political exposition into a visual medium. This concluding OVA series was generally well-received by the existing fanbase for successfully tightening the narrative arc and providing closure to the characters' long-standing military and diplomatic journey.
