Provenance

Where it came from

Bannertail: The Story of Gray Squirrel was produced by Nippon Animation in 1979 as part of the studio's celebrated World Masterpiece Theater collection. Adapted from the children’s novel by Ernest Thompson Seton, the series follows the upbringing and survival of a young squirrel named Bannertail after he is orphaned and taken in by a cat. The production was intended to instill values of nature, family, and resilience in young viewers, reflecting the studio's commitment to high-quality, literary-based animation that characterized Japanese television in the late 1970s.

The character design and visual direction were heavily influenced by the naturalistic and emotive style championed by directors like Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, who had worked on earlier iterations of the World Masterpiece series. By emphasizing realistic animal behaviors alongside anthropomorphic storytelling, the show achieved a distinct aesthetic that distinguished it from the more kinetic, action-oriented animation of the era. Upon its release, it was well-received by audiences for its gentle tone and educational focus, eventually becoming a notable, if quiet, entry in the history of global children's television programming.
