Where it came from
Battle of Clay, released in 2004, is a niche original net animation produced as an experimental short film. It emerged during a period when independent Japanese creators were beginning to utilize the internet as a primary distribution platform for non-commercial, high-concept visual storytelling, bypassing the traditional broadcast television pipeline.
The piece is noted for its distinctive, minimalist aesthetic, focusing on symbolic conflict and stylized motion. Created by an independent artist within the emerging digital art scene, the work was received as a curiosity by enthusiasts of underground animation, serving as a snapshot of the era’s transition toward direct-to-audience digital release formats.
